Symptoms may not necessarily be evident or may not appear until several days after taking Levothyroxine Sodium tablets.
Treatment of Overdosage:
Levothyroxine sodium should be reduced in dose or temporarily discontinued if signs or symptoms of overdosage occur. Acute Massive Overdosage - This can be a life-threatening emergency, hence, symptomatic and supportive therapy should be started immediately. If not contraindicated (e.g., by seizures, coma, or loss of the gag reflex), the stomach should be emptied by emesis or gastric lavage to reduce gastrointestinal absorption. Activated charcoal or cholestyramine can also be used to decrease absorption. Central and peripheral increased sympathetic activity may be treated by administering B-receptor antagonists, e.g., propranolol (1 to 3 mg intravenously over a 10-minute period, or orally, 80 to 160 mg/day). Provide respiratory support as required and control congestive heart failure. Fever, hypoglycemia, and fluid loss should be controlled as necessary. Glucocorticoids may be given to prevent the conversion of T4 to T3.

Levothyroxine Sodium During Pregnancy
Levothyroxine Sodium has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category A. Studies in pregnant women treated with oral Levothyroxine Sodium (Thyronorm tablets) to maintain a euthyroid state have not shown an increased risk of fetal abnormalities.
Hypothyroidism during pregnancy is associated with a greater risk of complications, including spontaneous abortion, preeclampsia, stillbirth and premature delivery. Maternal hypothyroidism can have an adverse effect on fetal and childhood growth and development. On the basis of current knowledge, Levothyroxine Sodium, USP should therefore not be discontinued during pregnancy, and hypothyroidism diagnosed during pregnancy should be treated.
Levothyroxine Sodium Nursing Considerations
Minimal amounts of thyroid hormones such as Levothyroxine Sodium are excreted in human milk. Thyroid hormones are not known to be associated with serious adverse effects and do not have known tumorigenic potential.
