Eltroxin Tablets (Generic Synthroid) - Product Information
Eltroxin tablets (Generic Synthroid) contain Levothyroxine Sodium, also called L-thyroxine, synthetic T4, which is a synthetic form of thyroxine (thyroid hormone) which is used as a hormone replacement for individuals with hypothyroidism and to treat goiter. Levothyroxine (T4) is a naturally occurring hormone produced by the thyroid gland and converted to the more active hormone triiodothyronine (T3) in peripheral tissues. The thyroid hormones are required for normal growth and development, particularly of the nervous system and increase the resting or basal metabolic rate of the whole organism and have stimulatory effects on the heart, skeletal muscle, liver and kidney.

Uses of Eltroxin Tablets (Generic Synthroid)
Eltroxin tablets (old formula by GSK - NOT Aspen) are used to treat hypothyroidism (low thyroid activity) - a condition in which the thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormone necessary to regulate your body’s metabolism and growth (Thyroxine). Hypothyroidism can be congenital or idiopathic as in the case of the autoimmune disease named Hashimoto's thyroiditis where the thyroid gland is destroyed by the immune system.
Eltroxin by GSK (Levothyroxine Sodium Generic) is also used to treat goiter (enlarged thyroid gland) typically caused by radiation treatment or surgery, a hormone imbalances, or cancer. Eltroxin is also prescribed for the management of cancerous thyroid nodules.
Eltroxin is a replacement hormone to relieve the symptoms of hypothyroidism including feeling tired, having muscle weakness & cramps, having a slow heart rate, experience dry & flaky skin and a deep husky voice, suffering hair loss, and weight gain. Eltroxin by GSK (Levothyroxine) is also used to treat Juvenile Myxoedema. This is a clinical condition with swelling under the skin and thickening of the skin that occurs in children who are deficient in thyroid hormone and often physically and mentally underdeveloped. This is usually because the mother had a nutritional deficiency in iodine while the child was in the womb.
How to Use Eltroxin Tablets (Generic Synthroid)
Eltroxin tablets (Levothyroxine Sodium) are taken on an empty stomach approximately 1/2 to 1 hour before meals. Eltroxin tablets have to be swallowed whole, and taken with a full glass of water. The tablets should not be split. The goal of replacement therapy is to maintain a normal blood thyroxine level. Symptoms such as diarrhoea, nervousness, rapid pulse, insomnia, tremors and sometimes anginal pain in cases where there is latent myocardial ischaemia may occur in case the dose of thyorxine is increased too quickly. In such situations the dosage must be reduced or stopped for a day or two and then restarted at a lower level.
Eltroxin Tablets (Generic Synthroid) - Dosage
The recommended starting dosage of Generic Synthroid for adults is 50 mcg to 100 mcg of Eltroxin (Levothyroxine Sodium) daily. The dose is adjusted at 4 or 6 weeks intervals by 50 micrograms until attainment of clinical and biochemical euthyroidism. Starting doses and dose changes may differ with individual patients based depending on age, the presence of cardiovascular disease, the development of tolerance (reduced effectiveness with continued use), side effects to the medication, and blood levels of thyroid hormone. It may take 1 to 3 weeks after starting therapy with Eltroxin tablets before improvement in the medical condition is seen. The dose of Eltroxin for treatment of hypothyroidism is given below:
Initially 50 to 100 micrograms daily and adjusted at four or six week intervals by 50 micrograms until attainment of clinical and biochemical euthyroidism. This may require doses of 100 to 200 micrograms daily. With patients aged over 50 years, it is not advisable to exceed 50 micrograms a day initially. Where there is cardiac disease 25 micrograms, given as 50 micrograms on alternate days, is more suitable.
For infants with congenital hypothyroidism a suitable starting dose of Eltroxin is 25 micrograms levothyroxine sodium given as 50 micrograms every other day is advisable. This may be slowly increased by increments of 25 micrograms (given as 50 micrograms on alternate days) every two to four weeks until optimal response is achieved.
The same dosing regimen applies to juvenile myxoedema, except that the starting dose for children older than one year may be 2.5 to 5 micrograms/kg/day. The calculated daily dose equivalent should be rounded to the nearest 25 micrograms to determine the actual prescribed dose.
