Mupirocin 2% topical Ointment ( T-Bact Ointment) is used to treat secondarily infected traumatic skin lesions due to specific bacteria. Mupirocin ointment is an RNA synthetase inhibitor antibacterial indicated for the topical treatment of impetigo due to susceptible isolates of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. This medicine works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth.
T-Bact Ointment is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Limited, India in the strengths of 2% and supplied in tubes containing 5g of the ointment. Active Ingredient present in T-Bact Ointment

The active ingredient present in T-Bact Ointment is Mupirocin. Each gram of Mupirocin Ointment, 2% contains 20 mg Mupirocin in a soft white ointment base consisting of castor oil, oleyl alcohol, hard fat and propylene glycol

Uses of T-Bact Ointment

T-Bact Ointment (Mupirocin 2% Ointment) is a medication that treats bacterial skin infections. It prevents bacteria growth and kills existing bacteria on your skin. You can rub this medication on your affected skin. Make sure you wash your hands before and after using the ointment.
Mupirocin ointment is FDA-approved to treat impetigo caused by certain types of bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus (staph) and Streptococcus pyogenes (strep).
Mupirocin ointment is also used to treat certain bacterial skin infections. Specifically, it’s approved to treat traumatic skin lesions (for example, cuts, scrapes, or wounds) that have become infected with certain types of bacteria. These are called secondary skin infections.

T-Bact Ointment (Generic Mupirocin 2% Ointment) - Dosage

Apply a small amount of Mupirocin ointment, with a cotton swab or gauze pad, to the affected area 3 times daily for 10 days.
Re-evaluate patients not showing a clinical response within 3 to 5 days. This medication is not for intranasal, ophthalmic, or other mucosal use.

Storage

Store T-Bact Ointment at controlled room temperature (59°F to 86°F, 15°C to 30°C). Protect from light.

Contraindications

T-Bact Ointment is contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Mupirocin or any inactive ingredient present in T-Bact Ointment.

Warnings and Precautions

• Severe Allergic Reactions:Anaphylaxis, urticaria, angioedema, and generalized rash have been reported in patients treated with formulations of Mupirocin, including T-Bact ointment.
• Eye Irritation: Avoid contact with eyes.
• Local Irritation:Discontinue in the event of sensitization or severe local irritation.
• Clostridium difficile-Associated Diarrhea (CDAD): If diarrhea occurs, evaluate patients for CDAD.
• Potential for Microbial Overgrowth: Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible microorganisms, including fungi.
• Risk Associated with Mucosal Use: Mupirocin ointment is not formulated for use on mucosal surfaces. A separate formulation, mupirocin nasal ointment, is available for intranasal use.
• Risk of Polyethylene Glycol Absorption: Mupirocin ointment should not be used where absorption of large quantities of polyethylene glycol is possible, especially if there is evidence of moderate or severe renal impairment.
• Risk Associated with Use at Intravenous Sites:: Mupirocin ointment should not be used with intravenous cannulae or at central intravenous sites because of the potential to promote fungal infections and antimicrobial resistance.

Effects On Ability To Drive And Use Machines

Mupirocin 2% w/w Ointment has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines.

Side Effects

The following local side effects have been reported in connection with the use of Mupirocin ointment : burning, stinging, or pain in 1.5% of patients; itching in 1% of patients; rash, nausea, erythema, dry skin, tenderness, swelling, contact dermatitis, and increased exudate in less than 1% of patients.

Overdosage

Intravenous infusions of 252 mg, as well as single oral doses of 500 mg of Mupirocin, have been well tolerated in healthy adult subjects. There is no information regarding overdose of Mupirocin Ointment (T-Bact Ointment). The toxicity of Mupirocin is very low. In the event of accidental ingestion of the ointment, symptomatic treatment should be given.
In case of erroneous oral intake of large quantities of the ointment, renal function should be closely monitored in patients with renal insufficiency because of the possible side effects of polyethylene glycol.

T-Bact Ointment (Mupirocin Ointment) During Pregnancy

Mupirocin Ointment has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category B. Reproduction studies have been performed in rats and rabbits with Mupirocin administered subcutaneously at doses up to 22 and 43 times, respectively, the human topical dose (approximately 60 mg mupirocin per day) on a mg/m2 basis and revealed no evidence of harm to the fetus due to Mupirocin.
There are, however, no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Because animal studies are not always predictive of human response, this drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.
Do not use this medicine without your doctor's consent in case you are pregnant. Stop using this medication and inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant during treatment.

Nursing Considerations

It is unknown whether Mupirocin is excreted in human milk. If a cracked nipple is to be treated, it should be thoroughly washed prior to breast-feeding.
Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
