Zathrin tablets (Generic Azithromycin) is used for for the treatment of patients with Upper respiratory tract infections (including ear, nose and throat infections), Lower respiratory tract infections, Genitourinary tract infections (including sexually transmitted diseases), Skin and skin structure infections, Prophylaxis and treatment of malaria, treatment of acne and treatment of chlamydial conjunctivitis.
Zathrin tablets are manufactured by FDC Limited in the strengths of 250 mg and 500 mg. We also have in stock Azee tablets by Cipla which are also used to treat the same indications.

Active Ingredient present in Zathrin Tablets
The active ingredient present in Zathrin tablets is Azithromycin. Each film coated tablet contains either 250 mg or 500 mg of Azithromycin (anhydrous) (as Azithromycin Dihydrate IP)
Uses of Generic Zithromax (Zathrin by FDC)
Zathrin is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria, such as respiratory infections, skin infections, ear infections, and sexually transmitted diseases. It is a macrolide antibiotic related to erythromycin. It fights bacteria in the body.
It is also used in children to treat middle ear infection, pneumonia, tonsillitis, and strep throat.
It will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu.
Zathrin Tablets (Generic Azithromycin) - Dosage
The recommended adult dosage of Zathrin tablets to treat various indications is given below.
Mild to moderate lower respiratory tract infections, upper respiratory tract infections and uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections: Adults Dosage: 500 mg as a single dose on the first day followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2 to 5 for a total dose of 1.5 g or 500 mg once daily for 3 days.
Treatment Of Sexually transmitted diseases: – Gonorrhoea: 2000 mg as a stat dose – Chancroid: 1000 mg as a stat dose – Non-gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis due to C. trachomatis – 1000 mg as a stat dose – Syphilis: 1000 mg o.d. for 5 days or 500 mg o.d. for 10 days.
Treatment Of Malaria: – Prophylaxis: 500 mg on first day followed by 250 mg/day for 7 days. – Treatment: 1000 mg to 1500 mg once daily for 3 days with usual doses of chloroquine.
Treatment Of Acne: 250 mg to 500 mg on 3 consecutive days in a week for 12 weeks.
How to Use Zathrin Tablets
Do not take Zathrin tablets in larger or smaller amounts or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. The dose and length of treatment with this medicine may not be the same for every type of infection. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Take this medicine for the full prescribed length of time.
The medicine may be taken with or without food. Take it with food if it upsets your stomach.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Zathrin Tablets (Generic Azithromycin) - Storage Requirements
Zathrin (Generic Azithromycin Tablets) are to be stored at room temperature (15°C to 30°C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light.
Zathrin Side effects
The most common side effects of Zathrin tablets (Generic Azithromycin) occurring in 2% or more of the patients undergoing treatment with this medication are are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain. Rarely occuring side effects are Palpitations, chest pain, Dyspepsia, flatulence, vomiting, melena and cholestatic jaundice, Monilia, vaginitis and nephritis, Dizziness, headache, vertigo and somnolence, Fatigue, Rash, pruritus, photosensitivity and angioedema.
Get emergency medical help if you have any signs of an allergic reaction including hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using this medicine and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:
• diarrhea that is watery or bloody
• chest pain, uneven heartbeats
• nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
• severe skin reaction, fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain, followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling
Less serious side effects may include:
• mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation
• stomach pain or upset
• dizziness, tired feeling, or headache
• nervous feeling, sleep problems (insomnia)
• vaginal itching or discharge
• mild itching or skin rash
• ringing in your ears, problems with hearing
• decreased sense of taste or smell
Overdose symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach discomfort. This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effect.
Zathrin Tablets - Contraindications
Zathrin tablets are contraindicated in patientas with a hypersensitivity to Azithromycin, Erythromycin, or any other macrolide or ketolide antibiotics or any inactive ingredient present in tablets.
Zathrin tablets are also contraindicated in patients with a history of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with prior use of Azithromycin.
Warnings & Precautions When Using Generic Azithromycin Tablets
Do not take Zathrin tablets if you are allergic to Azithromycin or to similar drugs such as Erythromycin (E-Mycin® and Ery-Tab, E.E.S.®), Clarithromycin (Biaxin®), Telithromycin (Ketek®), or Troleandomycin (Tao®). You should also not use this medicine if you have ever had jaundice or liver problems caused by taking azithromycin.
To make sure you can safely take this medicine tell your doctor if you have any of these other conditions:
• liver disease
• kidney disease
• myasthenia gravis
• a heart rhythm disorder
• a history of Long QT syndrome
Do not take antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium within 2 hours before or after you take this medicine. Antacids include Antacid, Rolaids, Maalox, Mylanta, Milk of Magnesia, Pepcid Complete, and others. These antacids can make it less effective when taken at the same time.
Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody, stop taking this medicine and call your doctor. Do not use anti-diarrhea medicine unless your doctor tells you to.
Avoid exposure to sunlight or tanning beds. This medicine can make you sunburn more easily. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) when you are outdoors.
Azithromycin During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Azithromycin has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category B. Azithromycin may be harmful to an unborn baby. There are no sufficient and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Zathrin (Generic Azithromycin Tablets) should be used during pregnancy only if clearly necessary.
It is not known at present whether Azithromycin is excreted in breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medicine without telling your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby.
