Active Ingredient present in Lipril Tablets

The active ingredient present in Lipril tablets is Lisinopril Dihydrate. Each tablet of Lipril contains Lisinopril Dihydrate equivalent to 2.5 mg, 5 mg or 10 mg of Lisinopril.

Uses of Generic Zestril (Lipril by Lupin)

Lisinopril is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), congestive heart failure, and to improve survival after a heart attack. It is in a group of drugs called ACE inhibitors (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme).

Lisinopril Dosage

The dosage of Lisinopril tablets for various indications is given below.
Treatment of Hypertension in Adults:
The initial adult dose is 10 mg once daily. Titrate up to 40 mg daily based on blood pressure response. Initiate patients on diuretics at 5 mg once daily

Treatment of Hypertension in Pediatric Patients:
In the case of pediatric patients with glomerular filtration rate greater than 30 mL/min/1.73m² the initial dose in patients 6 years of age and older is 0.07 mg per kg (up to 5 mg total) once daily.

Heart Failure:
Initiate with 5 mg once daily. Increase dose as tolerated to 40 mg daily

Acute Myocardial Infarction (MI):
Give A dose of 5 mg has to be given within 24 hours of MI, followed by 5 mg after 24 hours, then 10 mg once daily.

Renal Impairment:
For patients with creatinine clearance of 10 mL/min and higher and less than or equal to 30 mL/min, halve usual initial dose. For patients with creatinine clearance less than 10 mL/min or on hemodialysis, the recommended initial dose is 2.5 mg.

How to Use Generic Zestril (Lisinopril Tablets)

Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor.  Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results from this medicine.

Take each dose with a full glass of water with or without food. Drink plenty of water each day while you are taking this medication.

Vomiting, diarrhea, or heavy sweating can cause you to become dehydrated. This can lead to very low blood pressure, electrolyte disorders, or kidney failure while you are taking it. Your blood pressure will need to be checked on a regular basis to be sure this medication is helping your condition. Your kidney or liver function may also need to be tested. Do not miss any scheduled visits to your doctor.

If you need to have any type of surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are taking this medicine. You may need to stop using the medicine for a short time.

If you are being treated for high blood pressure, keep using this medicine even if you feel fine. High blood pressure often has no symptoms.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Lisinopril Side Effects

Common Lisinopril side effects occuring in 2% or more of the patients and greater than placebo are:
Hypertension: headache, dizziness and cough
Heart Failure: hypotension and chest pain
Acute Myocardial Infarction: hypotension

Get emergency medical help if you have any signs of an allergic reaction including: hives, severe stomach pain, difficulty breathing, and swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
• feeling light-headed, fainting
• urinating more or less than usual, or not at all
• fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms
• tired feeling, muscle weakness, and pounding or uneven heartbeats
• chest pain
• swelling, rapid weight gain

Less serious Lisinopril side effects may include:
• cough
• dizziness, drowsiness, headache
• depressed mood
• nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, upset stomach
• mild skin itching or rash

Lipril (Lisinopril Tablets) Contraindications

Lipril tablets are contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Lisinopril or any other ingredient present in Lipril tablets.
They are also contraindicated in patients with Angioedema or a history of hereditary or idiopathic angioedema. Co-administration of aliskiren with Zestril in patients with diabetes is also contraindicated.

Warnings & Precautions When Using Lisinopril Tablets

Do not use Lipril (Lisinopril tablets) if you are allergic to lisinopril (the active ingredient) or to any other ACE inhibitor, such as benazepril (Lotensin®), captopril (Capoten®), fosinopril (Monopril®), enalapril (Vasotec®), moexipril (Univasc®), perindopril (Aceon®), quinapril (Accupril®), ramipril (Altace®), or trandolapril (Mavik®).

If you have certain conditions, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely take this medicine. Before you take this medicine, tell your doctor if you have:
• kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis)
• liver disease
• heart disease or congestive heart failure
• diabetes
• a connective tissue disease such as Marfan syndrome, Sjogren's syndrome, lupus, scleroderma, or rheumatoid arthritis

Make sure you know how you react to Lipril (Lisinopril tablets) before you drive, operate machinery or do anything else that could be dangerous if you are dizzy or light-headed.

Do not use salt substitutes or potassium supplements while taking the medicine unless your doctor has told you to.

Lisinopril And Alcohol

Lisinopril tablets may cause dizziness, light-headedness, tiredness and drowsiness in some people.In case you drink alcohol, dizziness or light-headedness may be worse. Patients are strongly advised to avoid drinking alcohol. It can further lower your blood pressure and may increase some of the side effects of Lipril tablets.

Lisinopril During Pregnancy

Lisinopril has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category D.
Use of medicines like Lisinopril (Lipril tablets) that act on the renin-angiotensin system during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy reduces fetal renal function and increases fetal and neonatal morbidity and death.

Nursing Considerations
