Uses of Generic Prevacid ( Lan Capsules by Intas)

Lan by Intas is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medicine that reduces the amount of acid in your stomach. This medicine is used in adults:
• for 4 weeks to heal ulcers in the first part of the small bowel (duodenal ulcers)
• for up to 12 months to stop healed duodenal ulcers from coming back
• for up to 8 weeks to heal stomach ulcers
• for up to 8 weeks to heal stomach ulcers in some people taking pain medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
• for reducing the risk of stomach ulcers in some people taking NSAIDs
• for reducing the risk of stomach infections (Helicobacter pylori), along with antibiotics amoxicillin and clarithromycin
• for up to 8 weeks for the relief of heartburn and other symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

GERD happens when acid from your stomach enters the tube (esophagus) that connects your mouth to your stomach. This may cause a burning feeling in your chest or throat, sour taste or burping. In some cases, acid can damage the lining of your esophagus. This damage is called erosive esophagitis. This medicine is used in adults:
• for 8 weeks to heal the acid-related damage to the lining of the esophagus (called erosive esophagitis) and to relieve symptoms, such as heartburn pain, If needed, your doctor may prescribe an additional 8 weeks of this medicine.
• to stop erosive esophagitis from coming back (studies lasted 12 months)
• for the long-term treatment of conditions where your stomach makes too much acid; this includes a condition called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

This medicine is used in children and adolescents (ages 1-17):
• for up to 12 weeks to treat GERD and erosive esophagitis, in children 1 to 11 years old.
• for up to 8 weeks to treat GERD and erosive esophagitis, in adolescents 12 to17 years old.

This medicine is not recommended for children under the age of 1 year.

This medicine may help your acid-related symptoms, but you could still have serious stomach problems. Talk with your doctor.

 

Generic Prevacid (Lan Capsules) - Dosage And Administration

Lan Capsules (Generic Prevacid) should be taken once daily. It is recommended that Lan capsules are administered in the morning before food inorder to achieve the optimal acid inhibitory effect, and hence most rapid healing and symptom relief. Generic Prevacid capsules have to be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed. The dosage of Generic Prevacid capsules for various indications is given below.
Duodenal Ulcer:
30 mg daily for 4 to 8 weeks then 15 mg for maintenance dose.
Benign gastric ulcer:
30 mg daily for 8 weeks.
Reflux Esophagitis:
30 mg daily for 4 to 8 weeks, then 15 mg for maintenance dose. The maintenance dose of GERD can be increased depending on the patient`s response.
Zollinger Ellison Syndrome:
60 mg daily to be continued till clinically indicated. Long term clinical experience is limited.
Renal Impairment
There is no need to alter the dosage in patients with impaired renal function.
Hepatic Impairment
The dose should not exceed 30 mg daily.

How to Use Generic Prevacid (Lan Capsules)

Take Generic Prevacid capsules exactly as instructed by your doctor. Do not alter your dose or stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor first. You should take this medicine before eating.
Lan capsules can be swallowed whole; do not crush or chew them. They can also be opened and sprinkled into approximately ¼ cup apple, tomato or orange juice, or on 1 tablespoon applesauce, pudding, cottage cheese, yoghurt or strained pears only.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Just take the next dose at your regular time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time. If you are not sure about dosing, call your doctor.
If you take too much this medicine, call your doctor right away.

Generic Prevacid (Lan Capsules) - Contraindications

Generic Prevacid (Lan capsules) are contraindicated in persons with a hypersensitivity to Lansoprazole or any other inactive ingredient present in Lan capsules.

Lansoprazole Side effects

Low incidence of side effects have been reported during clinical trials of Lansoprazole (Generic Prevacid), including headache, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, constipation, flatulence, dizziness, fatigue rash, urticaria and pruritus. Side effects reported since Lansoprazole has been marketed are:
Body as a Whole - anaphylactoid-like reaction;
Digestive System - hepatotoxicity, vomiting;
Haemic and Lymphatic System - agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, hemolytic anemia, leukopenia, neutropenia, pancytopenia, thrombocytopenia, and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura;
Special Senses - speech disorder;
Urogenital System - urinary retention.

Serious allergic reactions. Tell your doctor if you get any of the following symptoms with this medicine:
• rash
• face swelling
• throat tightness
• difficulty breathing

Your doctor may stop this medicine if these symptoms happen.

People who are taking multiple daily doses of proton pump inhibitor medicines for a long period of time may have an increased risk of fractures of the hip, wrist or spine.

Before you take Generic Prevacid, tell your doctor if you:
• have liver problems
• have phenylketonuria; this medicine contains aspartame
• have any other medical conditions

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. This medicine may affect how other medicines work, and other medicines may affect how this medicine works. Especially tell your doctor if you take:
• ampicillin sodium (Unasyn) or ampicillin trihydrate (Principen)
• atazanavir (Reyataz®)
• digoxin (Lanoxicaps®, Lanoxin®)
• a product that contains iron
• ketoconazole (Nizoral®)
• warfarin (Coumadin®, Jantoven®)
• tacrolimus (Prograf®)
• theophylline (Theo-24®, Theolair®)

Lansoprazole During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Lansoprazole (Generic Prevacid) has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category B. Animal reproduction studies have revealed no evidence of impaired fertility or harm to the fetus due to Lansoprazole.
There are, however, no adequate or well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Because animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, Generic Prevacid should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.

It is not known whether Lansoprazole is excreted in human milk. Since many medications are excreted in human milk, and the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants from Lansoprazole, a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue Lansoprazole, taking into account the importance of Lansoprazole to the mother.
