Generic Mebendazole (Lupimeb 100 mg tablets by Lupin) is an anthelmintic used to treat patients two years of age and older with gastrointestinal infections caused by threadworms (pinworms) and other common worm infections (such as whipworm, roundworm, hookworm). This medication has also been used to treat infestations due to Strongyloides stercoralis (threadworm) and Taenia solium (large tapeworms).

Lupimeb tablets, an effective deworming medication for humans are manufactured by Lupin Limited, India in the strengths of 100 mg. The active ingredient present in Lupimeb tablets is Mebendazole. Each Lupimeb tablet contains 100 mg of Mebendazole.

Uses of Lupimeb Tablets

Mebendazole Tablets (Lupimeb by Lupin), which belongs to the group of medicines called 'anthelmintics' is used to treat intestinal worm infections such as threadworms (pinworms), whipworm, roundworm, and hookworm. This drug has also been used to treat infestations due to Strongyloides stercoralis (threadworm) and Taenia solium (large tapeworms). This medicine is regarded as an effective deworming medication for humans.

Mebendazole Tablets - Mode of Action

Mebendazole inhibits the formation of the worms' microtubules and causes ultrastructural degenerative changes in its intestine. As a result, its glucose uptake and the digestive and reproductive functions are disrupted, leading to immobilization, inhibition of egg production and death of the helminth.

Generic Mebendazole (Lupimeb Tablets) - Dosage

Take each dose with a full glass of water. This medication is taken orally and can be administered with or without food. The best time to take a deworming tablet like Generic Mebendazole is at night.

Mebendazole Dose For Pinworm (Enterobiasis):
For treatment of pinworm infections, the medication is usually given as a single dose of one Generic Mebendazole 100 mg tablet. If necessary, a second treatment of Lupimeb may be given in a few weeks.

Mebendazole Tapeworm Dosage:
The dosage for treatment of Tapeworm infection is 1 tablet of Lupimeb 100 mg (Generic Mebendazole), usually twice a day in morning and evening for 3 consecutive days, or as directed by your doctor. If necessary, a second treatment may be given in a few weeks.

Mebendazole Whipworm (Trichuriasis) Dosage:
The dosage for treatment of Whipworm (Trichuriasis) infection is 1 tablet of Lupimeb 100 mg, usually twice a day in morning and evening for 3 consecutive days, or as directed by your doctor. If necessary, a second treatment may be given in a few weeks.

Mebendazole Roundworm (Ascariasis) Dosage:
The dosage for treatment of Roundworm (Ascariasis) infection is 1 tablet of Lupimeb 100 mg, usually twice a day in morning and evening for 3 consecutive days, or as directed by your doctor. If necessary, a second treatment may be given in a few weeks.

Mebendazole Hookworm Dosage:

How Long Does It Take For Mebendazole To Work

The medication should usually work within a week or two.

Mebendazole (Lupimeb Tablets) - Missed Dose Instructions

If you forget to take Generic Mebendazole (Lupimeb Tablets) at the scheduled time, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the usual time and consult the doctor.
Do not take two doses together to compensate for a missed dose.

Adhere to the treatment regimen as recommended by the doctor. Even if there is an improvement in your medical condition, do not stop treatment with the medicine without consulting your doctor.

Lupimeb Tablets Contraindications

Lupimeb tablets are contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Mebendazole or any inactive ingredient present in Lupimeb tablets.

Lupimeb tablets are also contraindicated in children under 2 years of age. Do not take Lupimeb tablets if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or might become pregnant.

Generic Mebendazole Tablets (Lupimeb by Lupin) Warnings and Precautions

Risk of Convulsions: Convulsions in infants below the age of one year have been reported.

Hematologic Effects: Neutropenia and agranulocytosis have been reported in patients receiving Mebendazole tablets (Lupimeb by Lupin) at higher doses and for prolonged duration than is recommended for the treatment of soil-transmitted helminth infections. Monitor blood counts in patients where this medicine is used at higher doses or for prolonged duration.

Metronidazole and Serious Skin Reactions: Mebendazole should not be used with Metronidazole (Flagyl) due to the increased risk of rare but serious life-threatening skin conditions known as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. Avoid concomitant use of Mebendazole and Metronidazole.

Carbamazepine (Tegretol, Tegretol SR, Equetro, Carbatrol), Fosphenytoin (Cerebyx), Ethotoin (Peganone), and Phenytoin (Dilantin, Dilantin-125) may interfere with successful treatment with mebendazole by decreasing its blood levels. Cimetidine (Tagamet) may increase mebendazole levels and increase the risk of side effects from Mebendazole tablets.

Mebendazole With Alcohol

You should avoid drinking alcohol, it can increase some of the side effects of Mebendazole Tablets (Lupimeb)

Generic Mebendazole (Lupimeb Tablets) Side Effects

Generic Mebendazole Tablets (Lupimeb) side eeffects reported during clinical trials were anorexia, abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, vomiting and rash. Check with your doctor immediately in case any of the following side effects occur while taking Mebendazole tablets:

  • upper right abdominal or stomach pain
  • yellow eyes and skin

The incidence of the following Lupimeb side effects, a deworming medication for humans is not currently known:

  • Blistering, peeling, or loosening of the skin
  • diarrhea
  • dizziness
  • fast heartbeat
  • joint or muscle pain
  • red skin lesions, often with a purple center
  • red, irritated eyes
  • tightness in the chest

Generic Mebendazole (Lupimeb Tablets) Storage

Store Generic Mebendazole (Lupimeb 100 mg Tablets) at controlled room temperature (59°F to 86°F, 15°C to 30°C). Protect from light. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Overdosage

In the case of accidental Generic Mebendazole overdosage arising from substantially higher than recommended or for prolonged periods of time, the following adverse reactions have been reported rarely: alopecia, reversible liver function disturbances, hepatitis, agranulocytosis, neutropenia and glomerulonephritis.

With the exception of agranulocytosis and glomerulonephritis, these also have been reported in patients who were treated with Mebendazole tablets at standard dosages. In the event of accidental overdosage, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea may occur.

There is no specific antidote. Activated charcoal may be given if considered appropriate. Vomiting and purging should be induced.

Mebendazole During Pregnancy

Mebendazole (Lupimeb Tablets) has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy category C. Mebendazole has shown embryotoxic and teratogenic activity in pregnant rats at single oral doses as low as 10 mg/kg (approximately equal to the human dose, based on mg/m2). Do not use this medicine without your doctor's consent in case you are pregnant. Stop using this medication and inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant during treatment.

In view of the findings during animal studies, the use of Mebendazole is not recommended in pregnant women. Although there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, a postmarketing survey has been done of a limited number of women who inadvertently had consumed Mebendazole during the first trimester of pregnancy. The incidence of spontaneous abortion and malformation did not exceed that in the general population.

Nursing Considerations

Limited data from case reports demonstrate that a small amount of Mebendazole is present in human milk following oral administration. Therefore, caution should be exercised when Lupimeb tablets tablets are administered to nursing women. Mebendazole is poorly absorbed orally; it is NOT likely to adversely affect the breastfed infant or milk production.
Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
