Uses of Generic Keppra (Levera by Intas)

Epilepsy is a medical condition where you have repeated seizures (fits) which are episodes that can vary from brief and nearly undetectable to long periods of vigorous shaking. They are classified into various types ranging from mild to severe. Generic Keppra (Levetiracetam tablets) works by controlling brain chemicals which send signals to nerves so that seizures do not happen. Generic Keppra is an anticonvulsant medication used to control epilepsy.

Levetiracetam tablets are used to treat the following conditions:
• partial onset seizures in people 4 years of age and older with epilepsy
• myoclonic seizures in people 12 years of age and older with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy

The dosage of Levetiracetam Tablets for various indications is given below
Partial Onset Seizures:
Adults 16 Years and Older
During clinical trials, daily doses of 1000 mg, 2000 mg and 3000 mg, given as twice daily dosing were shown to be effective.
Myoclonic Seizures in Patients 12 Years of Age and Older with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy:
Treatment should be started with a dose of 1000 mg/day, given as twice daily dosing (500 mg twice daily). Dosage should be increased by 1000 mg/day every 2 weeks to the recommended daily dose of 3000 mg.
Primary Generalized Tonic-Clonic Seizures:
Adults 16 Years and Older
Treatment should be started with a dose of 1000 mg/day, given as twice daily dosing (500 mg twice daily). Dosage should be increased by 1000 mg/day every 2 weeks to the recommended daily dose of 3000 mg.

How to Use Levetiracetam Tablets (Generic Keppra)

Take Levetiracetam Tablets exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Generic Keppra usually taken twice a day at the same times each day. Take this medicine with or without food. Swallow the tablets whole. Do not chew or crush tablets.
Your doctor or healthcare provider may change your dose. Do not change your dose without talking to your healthcare provider.
If you miss a dose of Levera tablets, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, just skip the missed dose. Take the next dose at your regular time. Do not take two doses at the same time. If you take too much this medicine, call your local Poison Control Center or go to the nearest emergency room right away.

The most common side effects of Levetiracetam tablets with an incidence rate of 5% or more and greater than placebo include somnolence and irritability. The other common side effects seen in people who take this medicine include:
• sleepiness
• weakness
• dizziness
• infection

The most common side effects seen in children who take this medicine, in addition to those listed above, are:
• accidental injury
• irritability
• hostility

Call a healthcare provider right away if you have any of these symptoms, especially if they are new, worse, or worry you:
• thoughts about suicide or dying
• attempts to commit suicide
• new or worse depression
• new or worse anxiety
• feeling agitated or restless
• panic attacks
• trouble sleeping (insomnia)
• new or worse irritability
• acting aggressive, being angry, or violent
• acting on dangerous impulses
• an extreme increase in activity and talking (mania)
• other unusual changes in behavior or mood

Do not stop Levera tablets without first talking to a healthcare provider. Stopping a seizure medicine suddenly can cause seizures that will not stop (status epilepticus). Suicidal thoughts or actions can be caused by things other than medicines. If you have suicidal thoughts or actions, your healthcare provider may check for other causes. This medicine can cause serious side effects.

Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of these symptoms:
• mood and behavior changes such as aggression, agitation, anger, anxiety, apathy, mood swings, depression, hostility, and irritability
• extreme sleepiness, tiredness, and weakness
• problems with muscle coordination (problems walking and moving)

A few people may get psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are really not there), delusions (false or strange thoughts or beliefs), and unusual behavior.

These side effects can happen at any time but happen more often within the first 4 weeks of treatment, except for infection. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away. These are not all the possible side effects of this medicine. • have or has had depression, mood problems, or suicidal thoughts or behavior
• have kidney problems

Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of them to show your healthcare provider each time you get a new medicine. Do not drive, operate machinery or do other dangerous activities until you know how this medicine affects you. This medicine may make you dizzy or sleepy.

Levetiracetam is classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category C. Studies conducted in animals have shown that Levetiracetam produced evidence of developmental toxicity at doses similar to or greater than human therapeutic doses. Levetiracetam Nursing Implications

Levetiracetam is excreted in breast milk.
