Generic Fenofibrate Tablets (Fenolip, Lipicard, Tgr) - Product Information

Generic Fenofibrate Tablets are used to treat high cholesterol and high triglyceride (fatty acids) levels in the blood. Generic Fenofibrate is also used along with diet in combination with a statin to reduce TG and increase HDL-C to treat patients with mixed dyslipidemia and CHD or a CHD risk equivalent who are on optimal statin therapy to achieve their LDL-C goal. High levels of these types of fat in the blood are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis (clogged arteries). Fenofibrate Generic equivalent are available as Fenolip, Lipicard and Tgr.

Generic Fenofibrate tablets are manufactured in the strengths of 145 mg, 160 mg and 200 mg. We also have in stock Lipvas 10 mg , 20 mg and 40 mg Tablets which are used along with diet changes to reduce the amount of cholesterol and certain fatty substances in blood.

Fenofibrate tablets are also used along with a suitable diet for treatment of adult patients with severe hypertriglyceridemia. Fenofibrate Generic was not shown to reduce coronary heart disease morbidity and mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Generic Fenofibrate Dosage

Patients must be placed on an suitable lipid-lowering diet before starting treatment with Fenofibrate generic, and must continue this diet during the entire duration of treatment with Generic Fenofibrate tablets (Fenolip, Lipicard, Tgr). This medicine can be given with or without meals. Generic Fenofibrate dosage for various indications is given below:

Primary Hypercholesterolemia or Mixed Dyslipidemia:
The starting dose of Generic Fenofibrate is 145 mg once daily.
Severe Hypertriglyceridemia:
The starting Fenofibrate dose for severe Hypertriglyceridemia is 48 mg to 145 mg per day. Dosage should be individualized according to patient response, and should be adjusted if necessary following repeat lipid determinations at 4 to 8 week intervals. The maximum dose is 145 mg once daily.
Impaired Renal Function:

The use of Generic Fenofibrate must be avoided in patients with severe renal impairment.

Warnings and Precautions

The warnings and precautions associated with the use of Generic Fenofibrate Tablets are:

  • Myopathy and rhabdomyolysis have been reported in patients taking Fenofibrate Generic . The risks for myopathy and rhabdomyolysis are increased when fibrates are coadministered with a statin (with a significantly higher rate observed for gemfibrozil). The risk for serious muscle toxicity appears to be increased in elderly patients and in patients with diabetes, renal insufficiency, or hypothyroidism.
  • Fenofibrate at doses equivalent to 96 mg to 145 mg Fenofibrate tablets for oral use per day has been associated with increases in serum transaminases. Liver tests must be monitored periodically when undergoing therapy with this medication.
  • Elevations in serum creatinine have been reported in patients on Fenofibrate generic. These elevations tend to return to baseline following stopping of Fenofibrate therapy. Renal function should be monitored periodically in patients with renal insufficiency.
  • Fenofibric acid increases cholesterol excretion into the bile, leading to risk of cholelithiasis. If cholelithiasis is suspected, gallbladder studies are indicated.
  • Exercise caution in concomitant treatment with oral coumarin anticoagulants. Adjust the dosage of coumarin anticoagulant to maintain the prothrombin time/INR at the desired level to prevent bleeding complications
  • The effect of Fenofibrate tablets for oral use on coronary heart disease morbidity and mortality and non-cardiovascular mortality has not been established.
  • Pancreatitis has been reported in patients taking fenofibrate, gemfibrozil, and clofibrate.
  • Mild to moderate hemoglobin, hematocrit, and white blood cell decreases have been observed in patients following initiation of fenofibrate therapy. However, these levels stabilize during long-term administration.
  • Acute hypersensitivity reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis requiring patient hospitalization and treatment with steroids have been reported in individuals treated with fenofibrates.
  • In the FIELD trial, pulmonary embolus (PE) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) were observed at higher rates in the fenofibrate- than the placebo-treated group.
  • There have been postmarketing and clinical trial reports of severe decreases in HDL cholesterol levels (as low as 2 mg/dL) occurring in diabetic and non-diabetic patients initiated on Fibrate therapy.
  • Avoid taking Fenofibrate within 1 hour before taking the other medication. Medications known to exacerbate hypertriglyceridemia (beta-blockers, thiazides, estrogens) should be stopped or changed if possible.

Fenofibrate Alcohol Interaction

Excessive alcohol intake should be addressed before triglyceride-lowering drug therapy is considered. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Fenofibrate generic. Alcohol can raise triglyceride levels, and may also damage your liver while you are taking Fenofibrate.

Generic Fenofibrate Tablets Storage

Store Generic Fenofibrate tablets at controlled room temperature ( 68°F to 77°F, 20°C to 25°C). Protect from light and moisture. Store tablets only in the moisture protective container.

Overdosage

There is no specific treatment for overdose with fenofibric acid. General supportive care of the patient is indicated, including monitoring of vital signs and observation of clinical sta- tus, should an overdose occur. If indicated, elimination of unabsorbed drug should be achieved by emesis or gastric lavage; usual precautions should be observed to maintain the airway. Because fenofibric acid is highly bound to plasma proteins, hemodialysis should not be considered.

Fenofibrate Generic During Pregnancy

Fenofibrate has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category C. Do not use Generic Fenofibrate tablets (Fenolip, Lipicard and Tgr) without your doctor's consent in case you are pregnant. Animal studies have revealed evidence of embryofetal toxicity and fetal abnormalities at higher doses that also produced maternal toxicity. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy.

This medicine could be used during pregnancy only if the benefit outweighs the risk to the fetus; according to some experts, use is not recommended.
When Fenofibrate Generic is administered along with a statin in a woman of childbearing potential, it should be noted that all statins are contraindicated in pregnant women.

Stop using this medication and inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant during treatment.

Nursing Considerations

Animal studies in rats during lactation revealed evidence of decreased survival and weight gain in offspring. Fenofibrate tablets should not be used during breastfeeding due to the potential for serious adverse events in nursing infants and the concern over disruption of infant lipid metabolism.
Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
