Active Ingredient present in Atavir Capsules

The active ingredient present in Atavir capsules is Atazanavir Sulfate. Each capsule of Atavir contains 300 mg of Atazanavir Sulfate.

Uses of Generic Atazanavir (Atavir by Cipla)

This medicine is used with other anti-HIV medicines to treat people 6 years of age and older who are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It is a type of anti-HIV medicine called a protease inhibitor.

HIV is the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). HIV infection destroys CD4+ (T) cells, which are important to the immune system. The immune system helps fight infection.

After a large number of (T) cells are destroyed, AIDS develops. This medicine helps to block HIV protease, an enzyme that is needed for the HIV virus to multiply. This medicine may lower the amount of HIV in your blood, help your body keep its supply of CD4+ (T) cells, and reduce the risk of death and illness associated with HIV.

This medicine does not cure HIV infection or AIDS. At present there is no cure for HIV infection. People taking this medicine may still get opportunistic infections or other conditions that happen with HIV infection. Opportunistic infections are infections that develop because the immune system is weak.

If you are taking antacids or didanosine (such as VIDEX® or VIDEX® EC), take this medicine 2 hours before or 1 hour after these medicines.

Do not change your dose or stop taking this medicine without first talking with your healthcare provider. It is important to stay under a healthcare provider's care while taking this medicine.

When your supply of Atavir Capsules starts to run low, get more from your healthcare provider or pharmacy. It is important not to run out of this medicine. The amount of HIV in your blood may increase if the medicine is stopped for even a short time.

If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible and then take your next scheduled dose at its regular time. If, however, it is within 6 hours of your next dose, do not take the missed dose. Wait and take the next dose at the regular time. Do not double the next dose. Warnings & Precautions When Taking Atazanavir Sulfate Capsules

Do not take Atazanavir Sulfate Capsules if you are taking certain other medicines. Serious life-threatening side effects or death may happen. Before you take this medicine, tell your healthcare provider about all medicines you are taking or planning to take. These include other prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Do not take Atavir if you are allergic to Atazanavir Sulfate or to any of its other ingredients. The active ingredient is atazanavir sulfate. Tell your healthcare provider if you think you have had an allergic reaction to any of these ingredients.

Tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Usage during pregnancy has not been associated with an increase in birth defects. Pregnant women have experienced serious side effects when taking this medicine with other HIV medicines called nucleoside analogues. You and your healthcare provider will need to decide if this medicine is right for you. Talk to your healthcare provider about taking this medicine while you are pregnant.
After your baby is born, tell your healthcare provider if your baby's skin or the white part of his/her eyes turns yellow. You should not breast-feed if you are HIV-positive because of the chance of passing HIV to your baby. Also, it is not known if this medicine can pass into your breast milk and if it can harm your baby. If you are a woman who has or will have a baby, talk with your healthcare provider about the best way to feed your baby.

Do not take this medicine if:
• you have liver problems or are infected with the hepatitis B or C virus
• you have end stage kidney disease managed with hemodialysis.
• you have diabetes.
• you have hemophilia.

Tell your health care provider about all the medicines you take including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Keep a list of your medicines with you to show your healthcare provider.

Atazanavir During Pregnancy

Atazanavir has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category B. Available human and animal data suggest that Atazanavir capsules do not increase the risk of major birth defects overall compared to the background rate.

However, because the studies in humans cannot rule out the possibility of harm, Atazanavir Sulfate capsules (Atavir) should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.

Atazanavir Nursing Considerations

HIV-infected mothers should not breast-feed their infants to avoid risking postnatal transmission of HIV. It is not known whether Atazanavir is present in human milk.

Due to the fact that the potential for HIV transmission exists as well as the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, mothers should be instructed not to breast-feed if they are taking Atazanavir capsules.
Do not breast-feed a baby if you are using Atavir capsules.
