Active Ingredient present in Mesacol Tablets

The active ingredient present in Mesacol tablets is Mesalamine. Each Mesacol tablet contains 400 mg or 800 mg of Mesalamine.

Uses of Generic Asacol (Mesacol Tablets by Sun Pharma)

Mesalamine is used to treat ulcerative colitis, proctitis, and proctosigmoiditis. It affects a substance in the body that causes inflammation, tissue damage, and diarrhea. It is also used to prevent the symptoms of ulcerative colitis from recurring.

Mesacol by Sun Pharma (Mesalamine) is the generic alternative of Asacol and similar to Pentasa. Pentasa is more useful for Crohn's disease due to its unique formulation, which enables a prolonged release of the active substance throughout the intestine tract. Generic Asacol is a delayed release enteric-coated tablets which generally releases the active ingredient only in the colon. While there are always clinical exceptions, Generic Asacol is generally suitable for patients with colitis only (ulcerative colitis or Crohn's colitis), but not disease involving the small intestine.

We supply Mesacol delayed release tablets by Sun Pharma which is also known as Generic Asacol. It contains the active ingredient Mesalamine and comes in strength of 400 mg and 800 mg.

Mesalamine (Mesacol Tablets) - Dosage

Mesalamine And Pregnancy

Mesalamine has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category C. There are no adequate and well controlled studies of Mesalamine tablets (Generic Asacol) use in pregnant women. Limited published human data on Mesalamine do not show any increase in the overall rate of congenital malformations. Some data demonstrate an increased rate of preterm birth, stillbirth, and low birth weight; however, these adverse pregnancy outcomes are also associated with active inflammatory bowel disease.

Animal reproduction studies of Mesalamine found no evidence of fetal harm. However, Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), an inactive ingredient in Generic Asacol's enteric coating, was associated with external and skeletal malformations and adverse effects on the male reproductive system during animal studies at doses more than 190 times the human dose based on body surface area. This medicine may be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Mesalamine tablets should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

Mesalamine During Breastfeeding

Mesalamine and its N-acetyl metabolite are excreted into Breast milk. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), an inactive ingredient present in the enteric coating of Asacol HD tablets, and its primary metabolite mono-butyl phthalate (MBP) are also excreted into breast milk.

It is not known whether Mesacol (Mesalamine) could harm a nursing baby. Exercise caution when Generic Asacol is administered to a nursing mother.
Do not use Mesacol tablets (Mesalamine) without telling your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby.
