Flonida, which is a Generic Fluorouracil cream is manufactured by Aurochem Laboratories (I) Private Limited in the strengths of 1% and 5 %. It is distributed by Menarini, Italy. We also have in stock Kz Cream (Ketoconazole 2% Cream) which is a broad-spectrum synthetic antifungal agent and is used to treat ringworm, jock itch, athlete's foot, tinea versicolor and yeast infections of the skin.

Active Ingredient present in Flonida Cream

The active ingredient present in Flonida Cream is Fluorouracil. 10 mg of Fluorouracil per gram of cream is present in the 1% strength and 50 mg of Fluorouracil per gram of cream is present in the 5% strength of Flonida cream.

What is Generic Fluorouracil Topical Cream Used For

Generic Fluorouracil Topical Cream (Flonida) is used to treat skin growths caused by sun damage. In 5% strength it is also useful in treating basal cell carcinomas of the skin, when conventional methods are impractical such as multiple leisions or difficult treatment sites. Fluorouracil topical cream may also be used to treat Mucous Membrane White Spots or Patches, Skin Inflammation due to Exposure to X-Rays or Gamma Rays, Inflammation of Lips due to Sunlight Exposure, Carcinoma In Situ of the Glans Penis, superficial basal cell carcinoma of the skin.

Fluorouracil Topical Cream - Dosage

Patients must be instructed to apply sufficient Fluorouracil topical cream to cover the entire face or other affected areas. Before you apply this medicine to the skin, clean the affected area and dry well. Wait 10 minutes, then apply a small amount of medication to the affected skin, using just enough to cover the area with a thin film. The medication must be applied twice daily with fingertips and wash hands afterwards. Avoid applying Flonida cream in or around the eyes or eyelids. You must NOT apply this medication inside the nose or mouth. If you do get the medication in these areas, rinse with plenty of water. Wash your hands immediately after applying this medication, even if you have used gloves. A treatment period of 2 to 6 weeks is usually necessary.

Generic Fluorouracil Topical Cream is applied to keratotic skin, a response occurs with the following sequence: erythema, usually followed by scaling, tenderness, erosion, ulceration, necrosis and re-epithelization. When the inflammatory reaction reaches the erosion, ulceration and necrosis stages, the use of the drug should be terminated. Responses may sometimes occur in areas which appear clinically normal. The treated area may become unsightly during treatment and in some cases for several weeks after treatment. Do not cover the area with tight dressings or plastic bandages. Check with your doctor whether you may cover the treated area loosely with gauze.

Use this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop using this medication without consulting your doctor. Do not increase your dose or use it more often than directed. Your condition will not clear faster, but side effects will be increased.

Fluorouracil Topical Cream (Flonida by Menarini) Storage

Store Fluorouracil Topical Cream (Flonida by Menarini) at controlled room temperature 25°C (77°F) with excursion permitted from 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F, ). Protect from light. Store Flonida Cream out of the reach and sight of children. Do not use Flonida Cream after the expiry date which is stated on the tube and the outer carton after “EXP”. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.

Flonida Contraindications

Flonida Cream is contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Fluorouracil or any inactive ingredient present in Flonida Cream. Flonida Cream is also contraindicated in the following cases:

  • During pregnancy
  • In patients with dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) deficiency

 

Fluorouracil Topical Cream - Warnings and Precautions

Application site adverse reactions are likely to occur during and for 4 weeks after treatment of actinic keratosis with Flonida Cream . Hypersensitivity reactions may occur with Generic Fluorouracil Topical Cream. Avoid treatment in the periocular area. Eye disorders, including corneal reactions have occurred with topical fluorouracil use.

Avoid accidental transfer of the drug into eyes and to the periocular area. If accidental exposure occurs, seek medical care immediately. Increased sensitivity to ultraviolet light may occur during and immediately after treatment with Fluorouracil Topical Cream. Fluorouracil may cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman. Advise females of reproductive potential to use effective contraception. Increased Fluorouracil exposures may occur in DPD deficiency. Discontinue Flonida Cream in case symptoms of Fluorouracil’s systemic toxicity develop. It is unlikely that the treatment will have any effect on your ability to drive or use machines.

Fluorouracil Topical Cream Side Effects

The most common side effects of Fluorouracil Topical Cream with an incidence rate of 68% or more include erythema, scaling/dryness, crusting, pruritus, stinging/burning, edema, and erosions at the application site. Erythema is observed in 99% of patients with actinic keratosis treated with Flonida Cream.

The following Flonida Cream side effects with a frequency not known have been recorded: headache, dizziness, nausea.

You must inform your doctor IMMEDIATELY in case you experience any of these side effects:
-Stomach problems such as pain, cramps, diarrhoea and vomiting
-Swelling and soreness of the mouth and tongue
-Fever or feeling generally unwell.

Fluorouracil Topical Cream Overdosage

Normally Flonida Cream overdosage will not cause acute problems. If Fluorouracil Topical Cream accidentally comes in contact with the eye(s), flush the eyes(s) with water or normal saline. If Flonida Cream is accidentally ingested, induce emesis and gastric lavage. Administer symptomatic and supportive care as needed.

Fluorouracil Topical Cream During Pregnancy

Fluorouracil has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category X. Do not use Flonida Cream (Fluorouracil Topical Cream) without your doctor's consent in case you are pregnant. Stop using this medication and inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant during treatment. Fluorouracil may cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman.

Fluorouracil is contraindicated in women who are or could become pregnant. In case this medicine is used during pregnancy, or if the patient becomes pregnant while taking this drug, the patient must be apprised of the potential hazard to the fetus.

No adequate and well-controlled studies have been conducted in pregnant women with either topical or parenteral forms of Fluorouracil. One birth defect (ventricular septal defect) and cases of miscarriage have been reported when Fluorouracil was applied to mucous membrane areas. Multiple birth defects have been reported in the fetus of a patient treated with intravenous Fluorouracil.

Generic Fluorouracil Topical Nursing Considerations

It is not known whether Fluorouracil is excreted in human milk. It is known that there exists some systemic absorption of Fluorouracil after topical administration. It is also a well known fact that many medicines are excreted in human milk, and there exists potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, use of Fluorouracil Topical Cream should be avoided in nursing mothers.
Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
