Flagyl tablets is used in the treatment of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria or are suspected as pathogens, in different parts of the body. Uses Of Flagyl by Abbott (Original Brand)

Flagyl tablets are used to treat many different types of infections such as gastrointestional infection, skin infection, bone infection, and joint infection. It is also used to treat respiratory infections but does not treat colds, the flu, and other viral infections.

Metronidazole Tablets (Flagyl) – Dosage

The recommended adult dosage of Flagyl tablets (Metronidazole) for certain indications is given below. Please consult your doctor for exact dosing instructions.

Urogenital Trichomoniasis:
In Female Patients:
One-day treatment - two grams of Flagyl, given either as a single dose or in two divided doses of one gram each, given in the same day.
Seven-day course of treatment - 200 mg three times daily for seven consecutive days. To prevent reinfection the consort should receive a similar course or treatment concurrently.
Amebiasis:
Adults Dosage:
For acute intestinal amebiasis (acute amebic dysentery): 750 mg of Metronidazole orally three times daily for 5 to 10 days.
For amebic liver abscess: 500 mg or 750 mg orally three times daily for 5 to 10 days.
Anaerobic Infections:
Adults Dosage:
400 mg orally three times daily for 7 days.
Bacterial vaginosis:
Adults Dosage:
400 mg orally three times daily for 7 days.

Flagyl Side effects

The side effects of Flagyl (Metronidazole tablets) are given below. Seek immediate medical attention or go to your nearest doctors’ clinic, hospital, or emergency room if you experience an allergic reaction or suffer a hypersensitive reaction such as difficulty in breathing or swallowing, swelling of the limbs or face, tight chest, hives, and skin rashes.

• The most common side effects Flagy tablets are:
• numbness or tingling in your hands or feet
• white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips
• pain or burning when you urinate
• diarrhea that is watery or bloody
• vision problems and pain behind your eyes
• trouble concentrating, slurred speech, mood or behavior changes, tremors, muscle twitching, seizure (convulsions);
• fever, chills, muscle pain, confusion, headache, sore throat, neck stiffness, increased sensitivity to light, drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting
• severe skin reaction -- fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain, followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling

Less serious Metronidazole side effects may include:

• stomach pain and diarrhea
• dizziness and loss of balance
• vaginal itching or discharge
• dry mouth or unpleasant metallic taste
• cough, sneezing, runny, or stuffy nose
• swollen or sore tongue

Warnings & Precautions

There is also the possibility of a disulfiram-like (Antabuse) effect reaction.

Contraindications

Flagyl Tablets (Metronidazole) are contraindicated in the following cases:

• Patients with evidence of or a history of blood dyscrasias should not be treated with Flagyl tablets since upon occasion a mild leucopenia has been observed during its administration.
• Patients with active organic disease of the central nervous system.
• Patients with a hypersensitivity to metronidazole and other imidazoles.
