Doxt-SL Capsules (Generic Doxycycline) - Product Information

Generic Doxycycline capsules (Doxt-SL) are used for the treatment of nose, ears, lung, skin, bone, stomach and bladder, chest, urethra, womb and rectum infections. Generic Doxycycline may be used in combination with amoebicides, which are used to treat parasites.

Doxt-SL capsules are also used to treat dental infections, sexually-transmitted diseases (STD) such as syphilis or gonorrhoea. It can also be used to treat and prevent malaria as well as anthrax (caused by Bacillus anthracis) and Leptospirosis.
Generic Doxycycline can be used to treat severe acne. Generic Doxycycline is also effective against Yersinia pestis (the infectious agent of bubonic plague), and is prescribed for the treatment of Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Since Doxycycline is one of the few medicines shown to be effective in treating Rocky Mountain spotted fever, doxycycline is used even to treat children for this sickness. Otherwise, it is not indicated for use in children under the age of eight years.

The active ingredient present in Doxt-SL capsules is Doxycycline Hyclate. Each capsule of Doxt-SL contains 100 mg of Doxycycline Hyclate.

Uses of Generic Doryx (Doxt-SL by Dr. Reddy's)

Doxt-SL is used to treat different types of bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, chlamydia, periodontitis (gum disease), and others. It is also used to treat blemishes, bumps, and acne-like lesions caused by rosacea. The medicine will not treat facial redness caused by rosacea.

Doxt-SL (Generic Doxycycline) - Dosage

Doxt-SL (Generic Doxycycline) comes as an oral capsule in 100 mg dosage forms.
Recommended Adult dosage of Generic Doxycycline Capsules (Doxycycline)
The usual dose of oral Generic Doxycycline is 200 mg on the first day of treatment (administered 100 mg every 12 hours) followed by a maintenance dose of 100 mg/day. In the management of more severe infections (particularly chronic infections of the urinary tract), 100 mg every 12 hours is recommended.

How to Use Doxt-SL (Generic Doxycycline)

Take Generic Doxycycline exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. You may take this medication with or without food.

Do not take this medicine with milk or other dairy products unless your doctor has told you to. Dairy products can make it harder for your body to absorb the medicine. Certain brands of this medicine may not have restrictions about taking them with dairy products. Do not crush, break, or open a delayed-release (Oracea). Swallow the capsules whole.

Breaking or opening the pill may cause too much of the drug to be released at one time. The enteric coated pill has a special coating to protect your stomach. Breaking the pill will damage this coating. You may break up this pill and sprinkle it into a spoonful of pudding or applesauce to make swallowing easier. Swallow right away without chewing. Do not save the mixture for later use.

Take this medication for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Skipping doses may also increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics.

This medicine will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu. If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using this medicine. You may need to stop using the medicine for a short time.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Doxt-SL Side effects

The common possible Doxt-SL side effects include anorexia, nausea, diarrhoea, glossitis, dysphagia, enterocolitis and inflammatory lesions in the anogenital region.

To make sure you can safely take Generic Doxycycline, tell your doctor if you have any of these other conditions:
• liver disease
• kidney disease
• asthma or sulfite allergy

If you are using this medicine to treat gonorrhea, your doctor may test you to make sure, you do not also have syphilis, another sexually transmitted disease.

This medicine can cause permanent yellowing or graying of the teeth in children younger than 8 years old. Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody, stop taking this medicine and call your doctor. Do not use anti-diarrhea medicine unless your doctor tells you to.

Avoid exposure to sunlight or tanning beds. This medicine can make you sunburn more easily. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) when you are outdoors. Do not take iron supplements, multivitamins, calcium supplements, antacids, or laxatives within 2 hours before or after taking this medicine.

Doxt-SL Contraindications

Doxt-SL capsules are contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Doxycycline (the active ingredient) or to other tetracycline antibiotics such as demeclocycline (Declomycin®), minocycline (Dynacin®, Minocin®, Solodyn®, Vectrin®), or tetracycline (Brodspec®, Panmycin®, Sumycin®, Tetracap®)or any inactive ingredient present in Doxt-SL capsules.

Symptoms of an allergic reaction caused by Doxycycline Hyclate pills can include shortness of breath, wheezing or difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body; rash, itching or hives on the skin. Do not take Doxt-SL capsules if you are taking medicines containing vitamin A (e.g. Vesanoid), isotretinoin (e.g. Isotane, Oratane) or etretinate.

Doxycycline During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Doxycycline (Doxt-SL) is classified as FDA pregnancy category D. This medicine can cause harm to an unborn baby. This medicine may cause injury and even death to the unborn baby if you take it during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.
Do not use Generic Doxycycline without your doctor's consent if you are pregnant. Stop using this Doxt-SL and tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant during treatment.
It is not known whether this medicine passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby.

Doxycycline Hyclate and Alcohol

Alcohol may also interfere with the absorption of Doxt-SL (Generic Doxycycline capsules). Hence consumption of alcohol is at best avoided.
